Think of the world as a whole, of the hospitals filled with patients who have been stricken with disease and calamity for many years; and the prisons in which thousands of people are held behind bars, their lives and pleasured ruined; and they asylums and hospitals which accommodate people who have lost their minds and have become insane. Are there not poor people living in tattered tents and hovels, who cannot find a bite to eat? Are there not women who have been stricken with calamities that took away all their children in a single accident? Or women have lost their sight or hearing, or whose arms or legs have been amputated, or who have lost their minds, or who have been stricken with chronic diseases such as cancer and the like? 'Allāh Subḥānahu wataʿālā says in the Qur’ān:
1. By Al-‘Aṣr (time).
2. Verily, man is in loss.
3. Except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and recommend one another to the Truth, and recommend one another to patience.
Mālik Ibn Dīnār (may Allāh have mercy upon him) used to say:
"Allāh has never punished a heart with anything more severe than the removal of ḥayā' from it."
Sulaymān explains: When Allāh wishes to destroy people, He takes away their ḥayā'. Once ḥayā' goes missing, you will find that person only repulsive and loathsome.
